Road closure updates for South Ellsworth Road project

On Tuesday, Sept. 7, the Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) contractor for the South Ellsworth Road project will close eastbound Cloud Road east of Ellsworth Road. During this time, only right turns will be permitted from Cloud Road onto Ellsworth Road and left turns will not be permitted for southbound travel onto Ellsworth Road. Rittenhouse Road and Ocotillo Road may be used as alternate routes. The closure will be in effect approximately one week.

Also as part of the project, crews will be crossing Orchard Lane on Friday, Sept. 3, to remove the existing waterline and install a new waterline in this area. This crossing will take place half at a time so that Orchard Lane will remain open. A flagger will be in place to assist traffic in and out of Orchard Lane.

The contractor is constructing a temporary detour road between Riggs Road and San Tan Boulevard to maintain access during construction. In addition, crews are clearing public right-of-way, removing fences, relocating mailboxes and signs, and identifying water valve and meter box locations. Currently, SRP is onsite relocating power poles on the south side of San Tan Boulevard. New water and sewer line installation is also taking place on the east side of the roadway as part of a separate construction project.

MCDOT, in partnership with the Town of Queen Creek and Pinal County, has begun improving Ellsworth Road from approximately 1,250 feet south of Empire Boulevard to Cloud Road. Improvements include widening the existing two-lane roadway to six lanes (three travel lanes in each direction), installing curb and gutter, raised center median, bike lanes, drainage and intersection improvements at San Tan Boulevard, Riggs Road (including the installation of a traffic signal) and Cloud Road. Construction is slated for completion in February 2011. Temporary closures or lane restrictions during the project can be anticipated. Access will be maintained at all times for residents, businesses and emergency vehicles.
